The Spectator Crosswords

The Spectator is a weekly magazine with an acclaimed thematic cryptic crossword.

The first in this series of Spectator crosswords - by Jac - appeared in the issue of the magazine dated 3 Jul 1971.

For the next ten years Jac was the sole setter of the weekly crossword, producing an unbroken run of 520 puzzles. Eventually he decided to reduce his commitment to the series and in July 1981 two new setters were introduced: Mass and Doc (who became The Spectator's crossword editor in 1999).

The team of setters was expanded with the inclusion of Columba, Dumpynose and Ascot, and since then other setters - regular or occasional - have appeared.

Spectator crosswords are available online for free on The Spectator website.
